My Eroding Heart

Written by James Record in 2013.

The life-giving sea erodes my fragile heart,
My delicate edges crumble into the dark abyss,
With enough wear, even the most confident,
Cannot stop their inner self being revealed.

For every time we fail and fall into the violent waters,
A part of us is rebuilt along the jagged cliff-line,
Sooner or later the transformation will be complete,
And we shall either become anew or accept destruction.

Nothing is certain and everything takes a long time,
Keeping from the edge will not save us forever,
We may be able to buy time and plan for the future,
But eventually we shall concede one way or another.

The pebbles which impede our minds,
Will one day become millions of grains of sand,
Each a memory which shall be lost to the depths,
Creating a beach of chance for future generations.

Burning With Anxiety

Written by James Record in 2013.

The stifling heat,
Suffocates those with anxiety and strife,
Loosen the collar,
Can’t stop this kind of warmth,
Fans too cannot blow cold enough,
To quell the fires,
Which burn hotter than hell’s brimstone.

Diving into the cooling ocean,
The water will boil dry,
If I don’t drown in my stresses first,
Swimming to shore,
Is always one arm’s length,
Further than I can reach,
No life guard to save me.

Climbing the tallest mountain,
Is only achievable,
By those who dare,
The glaciers will melt,
And cast me from the peak,
Long before I can remember,
Why I cared.

Starring at the sun,
My body sweating tears,
Despair cannot be shed,
By hiding in the shade,
The black road glares reminders,
That the troubled cannot run,
As their sanctuary is always over the horizon.
